Where We Work

Chief Oil & Gas is engaged in the exploration, development and production of oil and natural gas reserves in several fields throughout the continental United States, including Marcellus Shale in the Appalachian region, Barnett Shale in North Texas and the Central Utah thrust belt.

Marcellus ShaleMarcellus Shale
The Marcellus Shale runs from the southern tier of New York, through the western portion of Pennsylvania into the eastern half of Ohio and through Maryland and West Virginia. Scientists estimate that the Marcellus Shale holds 500 trillion cubic feet of clean natural gas. If even 10 percent is recovered, it could supply America's natural gas needs for 2 years, significantly reducing the nation's dependence on foreign energy sources. Shale drilling is a safe, effective and environmentally sound way to produce clean-burning natural gas. Read More.
Barnett ShaleBarnett Shale
The Barnett Shale is a large natural gas field encompassing more than 5,000 square miles and covering at least 17 counties in North Texas. In recent years, advances in drilling and completion technology have made it possible for energy companies to extract large amounts of natural gas from shale. A recent study by economist Ray Perryman estimated the Barnett Shale is contributing $5 billion annually and 55,000 permanent jobs to North Texas. Chief Oil & Gas was one of the early producers in the Barnett Shale drilling its first well in 1997. Read More.
Central UtahCentral Utah
After over 50 years of exploration by multiple companies in the Central Utah thrust belt (Hingeline), the 2004 discovery of the Covenant Oil Field proved that this region contains the right components for large accumulations of oil. Chief has a leasehold interest in over 250,000 acres, primarily in the Central Utah thrust belt, and plans to run seismic imaging to evaluate prospective drilling areas. Read More.
Our Drilling Process
Chief Oil & Gas has been drilling and producing clean natural gas from shale for more than a decade, and we are proud of our environmental record as well as the way in which we have efficiently and responsibly protected water and other natural resources.
